Two ways to live: The choice we all face

We are community of believers with a desire to know God and make him known to others.

As sinners saved by the free gift of God in Jesus Christ, we invite you to join this community of imperfect people in our discovery of the new life that is found in glorifying and enjoying God now and forever.

Community Presbyterian Church (CPC) is a Bible-believing Reformed and Presbyterian church meeting for worship in the historic Newtown Meeting House by the flagpole on Main Street in Newtown, Conn.

With members living in and around the greater Danbury and Waterbury region, Community Presbyterian Church has sought to serve the area with the gospel of the Lord Jesus Christ since 1982.

We would welcome the opportunity to get to know you better and for you to know us as we continue to grow in grace.

We are a congregation of the Orthodox Presbyterian Church (OPC), a reformed denomination steadfastly committed to the glory of God.

Now, you may wonder, What does it mean to be Reformed and Presbyterian? What does it mean for us to be Community Orthodox Presbyterian Church? What, if anything, is in a name anyway? That's what we would love to share with you.

Community. We find our community in the communion we have with and through our Savior, Jesus Christ. As such, we desire to continue to proclaim the good news of Jesus Christ to Newtown and the surrounding areas. As God's word tells us, "What we have seen and heard we proclaim to you also, so that you may have fellowship with us; and indeed our fellowship is with the Father, and with His Son Jesus Christ." 1 John 1:3. That means we believe that the Lord is the one who has made us a community of believers and keeps us so.

Orthodox. The 16th-century protestant reformation was dedicated to bringing the church back to the Word of God and in essence to God himself. Bringing God's people back to the Scriptures, to know and enjoy God more fully directly from his Word, changed everything. Even despite a time of great trial, the effects of reformation were a greater understanding of God's majesty over all of life and a reminder that the Church depends only on God's love in Christ for salvation. "For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish, but have eternal life." John 3:16. We desire to be a continuing part of that reforming movement. The word "orthodox" simply means "straight teaching." We believe the Bible in its entirety to be the inspired, infallible Word of God. As such, we strive to be true to the original gospel message proclaimed in the Bible.

Presbyterian. The word Presbyterian means "ruled by elders" and describes our church's leadership. Ruling elders, who are elected from among the members of the congregation itself, govern the congregation along with the minister. "And when they had appointed elders for them in every church, having prayed with fasting, they commended them to the Lord in whom they believed." Acts 14:23.

Church. We are a community of Christians who worship God the Father, Son and Spirit and who seek to faithfully minister the Word of God. We desire to do this with the same mercy and compassion of Christ that we ourselves have received. We desire to minister to the lost and the searching, to those who desire to know the Lord and are being called according to his purpose. We seek to faithfully administer the New Testament sacraments of Baptism and the Lord's Supper and to tend the flock in the loving exercise of church discipline.
